String students audition at the regional level (28 regions) to earn the right to submit a recorded audition for the statewide competition. There is a limit to how many students may record at the regional level for each string instrument. During the second weekend in November, panels are assembled in one large metropolitan area of the state to judge the recordings and to select the students. The top players are assigned to the Symphony Orchestra, the next group to the Philharmonic Orchestra and the final group to the String Orchestra. The evening before the conference, students audition for seating within their respective orchestra. Wind and percussion players are selected from a pool that also determines members of the All-State Bands. These are all live auditions, starting first at the regional level (28 regions), then moving to the area regions (7 areas). The top scoring wind and percussion players in each area are selected for All-State and are auditioned for seating the day before the state conference.
